Home Automation

Home Automation

Home automation is the way that all of our devices and appliances will be networked together to provide us with a seamless control over all aspects of our home and more. Home automation has been around from many decades in terms of lighting and simple appliance control and only recently has technology caught up for the idea of the interconnected world, allowing full control of your home from anywhere, to become a reality. With home automation, you dictate how a device should react, when it should react, and why it should react.

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

Every year, much of the energy the U.S. consumes is wasted through transmission, heat loss and inefficient technology -- costing American families and businesses billions of dollars, and leading to increased carbon pollution which contributes to a global warming.

Energy efficiency is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to combat climate change, clean the air we breathe, improve the competitiveness of our businesses and reduce energy costs for consumers. To disbelieve of many, this is actually a simple process.

Energy Efficiency

A typical American family spends nearly $2,000 per year on their home energy bills. Much of that money, however, is wasted through leaky windows or ducts, old appliances, or inefficient heating and cooling systems. Reducing energy use reduces energy costs and may result in a financial cost saving to consumers if the energy savings offset any additional costs of implementing an energy-efficient technology.

Energy Effciency

According to the International Energy Agency, improved energy efficiency in buildings, industrial processes and transportation could reduce the world's energy needs in 2050 by one third, and help control global emissions of greenhouse gases. Another important solution is to remove government-led energy subsidies that promote high energy consumption and inefficient energy use in more than half of the countries in the world.

  • Air Sealing
    • Reducing the amount of air that leaks in and out of your home is a cost-effective way to cut heating and cooling costs, improve durability, increase comfort, and create a healthier indoor environment. Caulking and weatherstripping are two simple and effective air-sealing techniques that offer quick returns on investment, often one year or less. Caulk is generally used for cracks and openings between stationary house components such as around door and window frames, and weatherstripping is used to seal components that move, such as doors and operable windows.

  • LED Light Bulbs
    • How much can you save by buying LED light bulbs? If you run a single incandescent bulb 5 hours a day for two years, it will cost you around $32 (depending on your energy rates). Most of that money is spent on electricity. If you run a single LED bulb 5 hours a day for two years, it will cost you $12.

  • Insulation
    • To understand how insulation works it helps to understand heat flow, which involves three basic mechanisms -- conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is the way heat moves through materials, such as when a spoon placed in a hot cup of coffee conducts heat through its handle to your hand. Convection is the way heat circulates through liquids and gases, and is why lighter, warmer air rises, and cooler, denser air sinks in your home. Radiant heat travels in a straight line and heats anything solid in its path that absorbs its energy. Should you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1.844.SOLAR.02

Battery Back-Up

Battery Back-Up

One day, you were sitting in your office and the power went out. But your computer kept running because you have an uninterruptible power supply or UPS. A thought went through your mind. “That was cool. I wonder if I could put my whole home on a UPS?”
Yes. Yes, you can. It might even be less expensive than you think.

Size Equipment

We need to figure out some things about your home and appliances use electricity. What we need to find out is the kilowatt hours, (kWh), watts (W), and amp (A) use of all the appliances and devices in your home. You might start writing these numbers down. They will help us a lot by properly designing your backup battery system and are useful for many other energy efficiency projects.

  • Appliances (KwH), (W) & (A) usage
  • Inverter/Charger for Battery
  • Size Battery Bank.

Size Inverter

The inverter is the device that will take direct current (DC) electricity from your batteries and convert it to the alternating current (AC) that your home’s appliances use. It’s capacity is measured in watts and volts. We want an inverter that has the ability to charge your batteries too. Because your home is still tied to the grid power, we want your inverter to be able to safely tie to the grid.

  • Size of Inverter/Charger
  • Type of Inverter/Charger
  • Grid Tie or Off Grid System
  • Solar Battery Bank
    • We will calculate how much electricity your home appliances are currently drawing electricity from the grid. We will make sure to answer all your questions. Free, simple and painless

  • Inverter/Charger
    • The important number for sizing the inverter is watts. The example home draws about 4.4 kW. You may want an inverter rated higher than that…but not too much. The bigger they are, the more expensive they are. The next important number is the battery bank voltage (VDC). This means the voltage coming from your battery bank to the inverter. How do you figure that out? A good rule of thumb is to add 12VDC for every 1000W of AC power that you’ll need. We know we need 4400W. Being just over 4,000W you can see that you’ll need 4 X 12VDC. So a 48VDC system is probably best.

  • Battery Bank Sizing
    • A battery bank is just a collection of batteries that are connected together. It’s the battery bank that will determine how long you can run your house while the grid power is down. So you need to figure out how long you want that to be. Take stock of outages in your area over the last few years. What’s the longest outage you’ve had? Was it a freakishly long time like a few weeks due to a hurricane? Try not to count that in to your calculations.

  • Battery Backup Bank Performance
    • Most battery backup systems are design to work about 10 years. Properly designed, the solar battery backup will power your entire home for days or part of your home. There is very little or no maintenance to operate a solar battery bank. Should you have more questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at 1.844.SOLAR.02
